Why I upgraded from the Leica M6 to the Leica M7

April 6, 2023

When it comes to film cameras, Leica is one of the most well-known and respected brands. As a photographer, I was always drawn to the Leica M6, but when I heard about the Leica M7, I knew I had to upgrade.

The Leica M7 is a more advanced version of the M6, and the price difference wasn’t much. It cost me $500 to upgrade from to the M7. My Leica M6 sold for about $2900 and the Leica M7 cost me $3400. It may seem like a lot of money for a film camera, but it is a fair price for a Leica film camera in 2023. I previously owned a Contax G2 which had aperture priority, and the Leica M7 also has aperture priority. Having aperture priority saves time trying to adjust the exposure settings, which is especially useful when taking pictures of a toddler. Another similarity between the Contax G2 and the M7 was that they both had a DX reader, which allows the camera to read the ISO on the film canister and automatically set the ISO. This helps avoid the hassle of adjusting the ISO whenever you shoot on a different speed and mitigate the risk of forgetting to.

Another great thing about Leica film cameras is that their prices don’t really depreciate. If I ever change my mind or need money, I can sell it and make my money back. The Leica M6 I owned was the TTL version, which is notorious for having electronic issues. It felt like a ticking time bomb, so I was glad to upgrade to the Leica M7. The main con of the Leica M7 is that it is battery dependent. You are able to shoot with the Leica M6 without a battery since it’s fully mechanical. The only thing the battery is used for with the M6 is the light meter. However, the Leica M7 does have a battery check feature, so you can always check the battery level before you go out shooting.

Overall, I am very happy with my decision to upgrade from the Leica M6 to the Leica M7. It has all the features I wanted, and it is a reliable camera that will last me for years to come. If you’re looking for a high-quality film camera, the Leica M7 is definitely worth considering.

Below are a few of my favorite photos with the Leica M7.
